I was ten when a television series called Jules Verne's Mysterious Island was broadcast, starring Omar Sharif. I was fascinated by the chest of instruments that improved life for the castaways. When I discovered Jacques Biny's lamps, I must have been eighteen. To me, they were Captain Nemo's instruments. I did some research and discovered that, in 1957, Biny designed and manufactured not simply lamps but lighting instruments. There was Biny Spot, originally numbered 243, and Biny Bedside, designed to provide precise light, particularly for reading. No frills, but an aesthetic from another world, as though straight out of a science-fiction film. Perhaps Jacques Biny was also a Captain Nemo fan. In any case, I'm convinced that the film director Wes Anderson would love Jacques Biny's lamps.
